Slemani (Kurdish: سلێمانی , Arabic: السليمانية) also called Sulaymaniyah, founded in 1784 by the Kurdish prince Ibrahim Pasha Baban, who named it after his father, Sleman Pasha. Slemani is a city in the east of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, . It is surrounded by the Azmar, Goizha and Qaiwan Mountains in the northeast, Baranan Mountain in the south and the Tasluja Hills in the west. The city has a semi-arid climate with very hot dry summers and cold wet winters.
The Old Town is considered as the heart of the city, even though it is relatively a young construction. You can wander around its large open bazaars and taste the delicious local food there. Being a major cultural center, the city is filled with local art galleries and museums that take the visitors on a time travel back into the history. Surrounded by the mountains, you can enjoy the beautiful overview of the city after a hike or cherish the amazing scenery in one the parks. The city currently hosts a population of roughly 800,000 people along with two public universities, and five private universities.
